Information: A female came to visit my feeders at the beginning of spring this year and Id’ing turned out to be tricky. The primary understanding coming down to the name “varied” there is a variation with these birds and Id’ing them needs to be flexible. I ran into the bright blue backed guy (last photo) first and could not really find such a blue and orange bird in all the textbooks. So keeping an open mind helps me with the id’ing. In terms of size it’s about the size of a Robin and the bird seems to rely only on the ecosystem of the pacific northwest.
