Location: Nancy Creek Washington state

Information: The other name commonly used is Saskatoon serviceberry and occasionally June berries. This is a large bush sometimes almost fifteen feet high in the spring they have beautiful white flowers and usually by the end of June or a few weeks in July the berries ripen and come in various colors. The dark blue (or black berries) are plucked for the purpose of jams and can be exchanged for anything you use blueberries for. The flavor is just like a blueberry but a very light taste instead of an overblown one. It works great in jellies, jams, pies etc… just don’t expect an overblown berry taste just a light flavor that is completely safe for human consumption. Indian’s would dry the berries and eat them all year long as well as use them to compliment food. They are a great treat while hiking and do not have even the slightest bit tartness to them.

Almost any berry jelly or jam recipe should work well to make either – most likely the blueberry ones producing the most successful. Many people use this berry in various ways and some consider it a delicacy. It’s been rumored (but I have not tried it yet) that it works beautifully when you exchange in equal amounts strawberries with serviceberries in a rhubarb-strawberry pie. It then becomes a rhubarb-serviceberry pie.

Identification: the white flowers in may combined with the dark berries are a sure id’ing method. Alongside of this you can look at the oval leaves which in general only are toothed towards the top of the leaf. They are also very popular with birds in my area spotted towhee’s and robin’s commonly are found in our serviceberry bushes.
