First, a few online recipes for the Oregon Grape

Oregon Grape Wine

Oregon-grape Apple Jelly

There is a tartness to this berry so making it in a pie is not really a common method of cooking the berry. This is why many of the jelly recipes online will add other berries to calm down the tart flavor; apples, blueberries and strawberries are commonly added. As a survival food it can be eaten as much as you like (or want) considering the tart flavor. An infusion has commonly been made with the dried root and applied to itchy and skin rashes to relieve both problems and by herbalist is commonly recommended for difficult diseases likeĀ psoriasis and eczema.

Identification: Oregon’s state plant is a beauty and was chosen for it’s ornamental properties on a year round basis. The leaves are shiny, colorful no matter what time of the year. The stem of the plant tends to be woody and in the spring develops bright yellow flowers that all insects seem to adore. In the thick of summer (July) the green berries appear and the tiny berries by the end of summer look like tiny grapes waiting to be plucked. The tallest plant I’ve ever seen is about four feet high while most rest down towards your calves or ankles.
